The Power of Prayer

Last Saturday something amazing happened. A five year old boy reminded me what it truly means to trust and believe in God.

Let me start off by saying last Saturday was the launch party for the Kids Club ministry 6:8 just started this week. We were expecting about 200 people and had lots of games and activities planned such as bobbing for apples, sack races, face painting, balloon animals and even a fire show! There was just one problem.

In Costa Rica it rains about 8 months out of the year. The heaviest months are, of course, September and October. During this time every afternoon right around 2:00 it pours down rain. Not just slightly raining like "Oh, I might get a little bit wet.” Rain, but a full on torrential down pour “I am instantly soaked to the bone.” Rain. Once I realized this main flaw in my plan I decided we would just have to hope it doesn’t rain and when it does we will just quit the games and go eat hotdogs in the community center.

As Saturday rolled around I went down to the park to start setting up for the kids who would start arriving at 1:30. After getting everything ready the kids start to come and they are having a blast with the games, but off in the distance I can hear the thunder rolling over the mountains.

Right around 2:00 Kelly pulls up in her van with her three boys. The boys take off and Kelly comes over to great me with a hug. (Shes sweet like that) And we start to talk about the party. “Everything looks great!” She says in her sweet Kelly voice. “Yea,” I say “I’m just worried it’s going to rain.” “We were worried about that too” She replied “We were so excited for the party. Ben was praying the whole way over that it wouldn’t rain, He’s so cute you have to ask him to pray and hear him pray out loud.” Imagining 5 year old been praying for God to hold back the rain made me smile “That’s so sweet! I’ll have to go find him.”

I went off toward the community center in search of little Ben when I found him running around the corner. “Ben! How are you?” I said excitedly “Hi, Alix!” he said excitedly in a way only Ben does. “Ben! Can you do me a favor? Can you pray that is doesn’t rain?” I pleaded excited to hear his sweet little prayer but Ben only looked at me. “I already prayed Alix. I don’t need to do it again.” He said mater a factly and ran off to join the other kids in playing. Wow he’s right, I thought, God hears us the first time and when Ben prayed he fully believed his prayers would be answered.

As the day continued I marveled at little Ben’s faith. Not once did it rain that day where we were. I remember at one point standing in the middle of the park and looking at the sky. You could tell in all the neighborhoods around us it was raining. The wind was blowing and up in the dark, gray clouds the thunder rolled threatening to bring the rain. But I promise you not one drop fell in Lagunilla.

God heard the prayers of little Ben and he hears the prayer of you and me. But do we really believe that? When we pray do we pray bold prayers expecting to be answered or do we pray weak, timed, halfhearted prayers wondering if He will come through.

God spoke to my heart on September 21st through the example of a 5 year old boy named Ben. “Believe in me” He whispered “Have I not promised you that I will never abandon you? You are my daughter and I love you. I will give you the desires of your heart if only you ask. I promised you this. Remember the faith you once had. Remember what it feels like to believe without a doubt. Trust me. I will never let you go.”

“Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven
Mathew 18:3-4

Te doy Gloria!

About 6 months ago I was blessed with the opportunity of meeting my sweet little boy Kendall.Kendall is an adorable, tough, little 4 year old who lives in Verbena one of the poorest most dangerous barrios we work in. He is incredibly active  and always wears a face of determination and a some what angry looking smile. I love this boy with all my heart.

Every Saturday, at our mobile feeding center, I get to hold him, give him piggy back rides on my shoulders and spin him around and every week I ask him "Kendall, am I your friend?" and in his cute little 4 year old voices he answers me and he always tells me "nope". That's ok, He is my friend and I appreciate his honesty.

A little background on Kendall's family. I haven't heard or seen of a father figure around  so most likely there isn't one. He lives with is mother Blanca, his sister Hazel and his baby brother Gabriel. One of the reasons he is so tough is because of his mother. Blanca is an incredibly strong, independent, woman who only ever speaks at one volume and that is loud. She is constantly yelling at the kids telling them to get out of the way or to get in line or to go watch your brother.

This past Saturday we took 6 suitcases of shoes to pass out in Verbena and Blanca helped us maintain order and to make sure people weren't cutting in line or taking more than one pair. We invited her and her family to come to church and the next day there they were walking in the door for the first time. I was so excited to see my boy in church! I picked him up and held him in my arms as I worshiped. The worship band was was singing a song we sing ever week which says "Te doy gloria, a ti Jesus" which means I give glory to you Jesus!

As I was singing these words I remember thinking "God, thank you for bringing them to church and I hope that Kendall gets to grow up here and that you will be glorified through him..." As I am thinking and praying this for him he starts to fidget as any little 4 year old would do. So I set him down and he takes off for the door of the church. I turn and see my dad stop him and turn him around and I go back to worshiping.

Four times Kendall tried to escape the church. Three times my dad was able to stop him. B
ut on the forth time he successfully twisted and darted past my dad out the door and into the street where he was hit by a car going approximately 25mph. I heard my dad and the greeters yell so I quickly pushed my way out of the church to see Kendall lying in the street.

Just a few seconds behind me Blanca comes running for her baby boy. I have never heard a more terrifying sound than the sound of a mother screaming as she cries out to God to save her son.The congregation poured out of the church everyone praying and crying. Blanca knelt by Kendall and prayed some of the most beautiful prayers ever heard. "God, I know I'm a horrible person, but please don't punish my baby, dont punish him punish me..."

Kendall should have died. A maybe 30Lb 4 year old hit by a full sized car going 25mph should have been killed on impact. Not to mention being dragged a few feet as the driver desperately tried to stop the car. Thank God I am able to say Kendall is a living miracle. Thank God that as I write this blog I am getting ready to go visit him in the children's hospital instead of attending a child's funeral. I will never fully comprehend what God's plan or purpose is in all this. Or why it happened. But I do know my God is good, and he loves Kendall more than anyone else ever will. I promise you not a day will go by that Blanca does not thank God for the life of her son.

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

On a finishing note today I am going to sit with Kendall in the hospital so his mom can go home a rest. I get to go because Kendall keeps asking to see "La muchaca con los ojos bonitos" or the girls with the pretty eyes. Even though he doesn't know my name, I think that's his way of saying we're friends :)
I feel blessed beyond belief!

To God be the glory forever,
- Alix

"Little Naomi, Little Naomi,
She loves her redeemer,
She is a Jewel,
A precious Jewel,
And she loves her redeemer!"

This is Naomi. She is 4 years old and lives in Tiribi. She is one of the most precious girls I know. She loves to have her nails painted, to sit on you lap, butterfly kisses and to be sung to! I love getting to visit her at our mobile feeding center on Thursdays. She is a joy and a blessing!

The Simple Things

Whenever we pass things out in the barrios we always mark the kids hands with a cross so we know who has gone through the line. Today little Axel came running up just after we had finished passing out all the cookies. Was scared I was going to have to tell this sweet boy "i'm sorry but there are no more". Instead he taps me and says "Gringa will you give me a tattoo like you gave my friends?" Yes, Yes I will. It's the simple things mater!

A New Name

Today in Verbana as I was writing names on the backs of their butterfly crafts I asked this little girl what her name was. She told me "it's Gorda" which is Spanish for fat or fatty. I was like "No your name, what is your name?" "Si es Gorda" her friend nodded in agreement that her name really was Gorda and after pressing the mater for a good 5 minutes I realized this 3 maybe 4 year old has only ever been called Gorda. She doesn't even know any other name. This broke my heart! These kids are in desperate need of love and they need to be told they are loved everyday! Today I've been pondering a new name to give her next time I see her. Which do you like best? Princess, Precious or Gorgeous. I'm open for suggestions. Let's give her a name that reflects how dear and loved she is by her Heavenly Father!

Baking Cookies

I just recently had the opportunity to invite some of the girls from the church over to my house to bake chocolate chip cookies! They were very excited because most kids here don't get cookies very often. We had lot of fun and the even took some home for their families.
